People and businesses should be able to use simple verified identifiers or aliases — instead of repeatedly exchanging complicated bank-account details. The underlying bank and payment networks still perform the actual transfer and settlement; AfricaPay ID provides the easier addressing and interoperability layer.
AfricaPay ID is not a payment network and not a payment platform. It is a payment-enablement and addressing layer intended to sit above existing banks, payment rails and settlement infrastructure.
Simpler Payments Through Identifiers
The Simple Idea
Banks and payment networks move the money. AfricaPay ID makes it easier to identify where the money should go.
- Personal payment identifiers
- Business payment identifiers
- Bank-independent addressing
- Verified aliases
- Secure identity mapping
Built on Proven Experience
The proposition builds on experience gained from Australia's PayID and New Payments Platform ecosystem. Members of our team were directly involved in delivering important elements of the Australian PayID implementation, including infrastructure and new software components required to support PayID.
- Australia demonstrated that an aliasing system can simplify payments across many participating banks without replacing the underlying banking infrastructure.
- A simple, memorable identifier can replace the need to share account numbers, BSBs and routing details for everyday payments.
- Addressing and interoperability can sit above existing banks rather than competing with them.
For Africa
For Africa, AfricaPay ID is positioned as potentially complementary to continental and national banking infrastructure, including systems such as PAPSS. AfricaPay ID is not itself a PAPSS service or payment network — it is an addressing and enablement layer that can work alongside the banking and settlement infrastructure already in place.
- Complementary to existing national and regional banking infrastructure
- Not a replacement for banks, payment networks or settlement systems
- Designed to make existing rails easier to use, not to duplicate them
Eventual Capability
The eventual capability could include:
- Personal payment identifiers
- Business payment identifiers
- Bank-independent addressing
- Domestic payments
- Cross-border payments
- Person-to-person payments
- Business payments
- Participating-bank interoperability
- APIs for banks and fintechs
- Integration with regional and continental payment infrastructure
- Verified aliases
- Secure identity mapping
Status
AfricaPay ID is in restricted preview while the addressing model, partner interfaces and integration approach are developed. It is presented here as a payment-enablement layer — not as a live payment network.
